Hydraulic safety for Fair and EXPO

Stop the risk of flooding for the pavilions of the Rho Fair and the site of EXPO 2015. This is also a step forward in the path that brings Milan and Italy closer to the 2015 Universal Exposition. In fact, the L2 lamination tank in the hamlet of Mazzo di Rho (where the Fair is located), a work useful for regulating the water of three springs, Cagnola, Marietti and Morganda, which in conditions of heavy rain and the high urbanization of the surrounding areas are the cause of periodic flooding.

What has been achieved is technically one flywheel tub, equipped with a sophisticated automation and control system that regulates its operation as a consequence of the flood conditions of the three springs. Characteristic of the project is that it was conceived to fit into a delicate context, given that there are the latest ones around residual agricultural areas shrouded in urbanization and roads. For this reason it was decided to preserve the natural characteristics of the place by limiting the above-ground reinforced concrete works and asphalt roofs as much as possible, and keeping the basin green instead of covering it with concrete.

The tank consists of a fully underground reinforced concrete portion (useful reservoir volume 4,300 cubic meters), intended for the accumulation of first rain water, and a large open-air basin covered with grass (useful reservoir volume 17,200 meters cubes); the fenced area on which it stands has an area of ​​about 30,000 square meters. There lamination tank it will also make it possible to reduce the flood flows discharged further downstream in the Olona river, which crosses (largely sealed off) the territory of Milan, thus contributing to hydraulic protection of the city.

There flywheel tub by Mazzo di Rho it is part of the intervention program which includes three flywheel tanks and an extensive separate network of wastewater and rainwater collectors for the hydraulic protection of the area north-west of Milan; a program financed by the Lombardy Region and followed by Ianomi SpA for design, procurement and execution. The total cost of everything is around 27 million euros, of which 8 for the collectors and 19 million for the flywheel tanks.
