Organic and GMO: let's talk about it

The theme of GMOs opposed tobiological agriculture makes people discuss, which is positive because when a problem (or an opportunity) arises, talking about it is better than pretending nothing has happened. The most difficult thing remains not to fall into evaluation errors due to the lack of information, or into preconceptions fueled by imperishable clichés. In short, it is an information problem, which must be tackled first of all by trying to understand.

An opportunity to try to understand was the conference Science in the Field last November, where experts from the university, the business and information world questioned how to feed the planet in the coming decades with good and healthy food, but also for everyone. Today we are 7 billion people on earth, in 2050 we will reach 9 billion: the problem arises. Science, innovation and technology (good, healthy and for everyone) are the only answer we have.

Provocative but effective the intervention during the conference of Antonio Pascale, agronomist and writer, star of Daria Bignardi's TV show The Barbarian Invasions: “GMOs are not monstrous products. We have been producing genetically modified plants for over 10,000 years, and this has allowed us throughout history to feed ourselves and eat healthier. The average yield of wheat has improved (from one ton / ha to 5-7 tons / ha) from the time of the pyramids to today, only in the 1900s: with herbicides, herbicides, fertilizers, and with genetic improvement. If we remove these innovations and go back to the so-called organic production is much lower ".

“Not to mention that organic doesn't free us from fatigue, organic needs a hoe - continued Pascale -. Let's not forget that in all cultures (in Africa still today, but also in Italy until a few decades ago) it was mainly women who spent most of their time hoeing. It is bad to forget the improvements made by our grandparents, it means not respecting the hunger they suffered and the efforts they made. The culture of the left is the bearer of this error above all, victim of a nostalgic knowledge, according to which all that is present is corrupt, all that comes from the past is good. But no one would apply this equation to medicine, for example: we all want to be treated in the most technologically advanced clinic. Why don't we think so when we talk about agriculture? "
