France, we return to biological and natural life


Philippe Meynard, mayor of Barsac, has well thought of distributing hens to the inhabitants of his city for reduce the production of waste. The idea of ​​the French mayor is to adopt a style of biological and natural life promoting values ​​such as self-production.

Good wine lovers know Barsac for the production of sweet white wines such as Chateau Climens and Chateau Contet, both of controlled denomination similar to Sauternes, for all the others, Barsac is a wine-growing village in the south-west of France with about 2,000 inhabitants, located on the left bank of the Garonne river and belonging to the Fironde department in Aquitaine, 37 kilometers away from Bordeaux. Meynard, having to face the problem of food waste of domestic origin, she began to consider the role of hens. A hen can eat up to 150 kg of food in a year and produce about 200 eggs.

Barsac's administration distributed one couple of hens to 150 families. The families signed a contract pledging to raise the hens for two years with the advantage of reducing the production of vegetable waste and ensure the self-production of fresh eggs. The surplus of eggs produced by the hens can be sold on the market.

The hens they are farm animals, families can be insured fresh eggs and ensure the presence of an unusual "friend" for the children. Not to mention that the hens produce droppings, which can be used for fertilization gardens, ideal for returning to a biological and natural life.

Mayor Philippe Meynard's idea was met with great enthusiasm, the day following the declaration of his project, the administration of Barsac was inundated with requests from families who wanted to win the animals. And so a waiting list was born and other families decided to buy hens outside the municipal project.

Following the example launched by the Barsac administration, more and more municipalities in France distribute hens to the inhabitants to reduce food waste and to raise public awareness on the values ​​of a biological and natural life.

A project like this in Italy?
Why not! Profits are not lacking ... With the distribution of 1,000 hens, the municipality of Podensac - which followed the example of the municipality of Barsac - has estimated that its inhabitants will produce 150 tons of food waste less with a saving of 15,000 euros! 15,000 euros for the pockets of the public administration can be "relatively few " but enough to be invested in the care of public gardens and in the creation of new green spaces.
