Energy saving at home: the refrigerator

Save energy it helps us spend less and helps the environment, thanks to lower CO2 emissions. Save energy it does not mean living worse or giving up something, it just means paying a little more attention and avoiding waste. Because yes, in the end the only real renunciation that can be associated with a good one energy etiquette it is precisely this: waste.

At home, waste of energy can be enormous, as large as we do not even realize. In it follows that in the energy etiquette of the energy saving the house occupies an important place, also because it is the place where we spend the most time and where there is the greatest variety of energy-intensive devices. Let's see them one by one, starting with the most fearful: the fridge (and his fellow freezer).

Fridge. Here it is the main devourer of electricity also because, through no fault of its own, it is always on. Did you know that refrigerators (and freezers) can consume up to 20% of the electricity needed for the entire home? Well then that it is of quality (a few chatter, look at the energy class and point straight to A) and that the thermostat is set at 3-6 ° C, the freezer instead between -18 ° C and -15 ° C.

To promote good functioning and the energy saving keep the condenser (in the back of the refrigerator) well cleaned: dust and pet hair can accumulate on the air intakes and force the engine to an extra effort. Clean the coils placed on the bottom or back of the fridge at least twice a year.

Then there are some small tricks in daily use that favor the energy saving. For example: cover the food you put in the fridge because the moisture escaping from the uncovered food forces the compressor to make an extra effort (consuming more). Defrost food by placing it in the fridge 24 hours before consuming it, food that defrosts will help keep the temperature low.

It is very important for the energy saving that the refrigerator or freezer is positioned in places as ventilated as possible and away from heat sources (away from the oven if possible) and that they are defrosted regularly. Always pay attention to the door seals, which must be closed properly: replace them when they are worn out. Open the fridge only when necessary: for every minute of opening it takes three minutes to return to the set temperature.
