Don't waste: advice and a prize

Ideas against waste: everyone can participate and that the best win, but above all the more, the better for everyone. The "Don't Waste" Award for 4 years, it has been calling associations and institutions, companies and schools to think of concrete projects and best practices to be disseminated, winners or not, as much as possible thanks to the power of the Internet. And networking, today, is the right strategy, according to Antonio Galdo, creator of the Award and founder of the portal "Non Waste", a mine of ideas and opinions that are constantly updated and constantly fighting waste.

1) How did the idea of the "Don't waste" award come about?

The award was born from an offshoot of the website www.nonsprecare.it and from my book "Do not waste"(Einaudi). Ours is now a very active community that exchanges useful tips to save and reduce waste through the network: so we decided to enhance the best practices, rewarding them and making them known on the site. The Prize, which will also be awarded this year at the end of October within the Genoa Science Festival, is now in its fourth edition.

2) What is the mission of the award and who is it for?

The idea was born to enhance good practices aimed at overturning the contemporary paradigm of waste. For do not waste we must be many: I am sure that we, all together, will give far more indications than the usual economists on what is a new, more balanced and more sustainable model of development. The Prize Don't waste it is divided into four categories: associations and institutions, businesses, schools and "The Person". Everyone can participate, and it's very simple: the instructions are on the site.

3) What kind of feedback does the prize have in the area?

Every year more than a thousand applications arrive, among the participants there are both large companies and small associations and also many individual citizens who have experimented with good anti-waste ideas and propose them. There is a lot of sensitivity on these issues, and people have understood the power of the Net to exchange news, advice and useful information.

4) What are the issues and sectors in which to act against waste present in the proposals of the companies?

First of all through innovation. There is no self-respecting company now that has not introduced product innovations oriented towards recycling, the use of new materials, sustainability and savings. And that means setting economic growth, development and employment in motion. Then there are the real "inventions" such as detergent that does not need water, or the cell phone battery that recharges in 20 seconds.

5) And where is the interest of the schools aimed at?

In many Italian schools, courses entitled "Do not waste”And this is a source of great satisfaction for us: it means that the battle is right, and can start from the first steps of the formation. Some schools we have awarded, others we have told. In general i "Don't waste" courses they are the way to a modern civic education and kids like them a lot, especially if they can combine them with some concrete experiment. In one school they made a perfectly functional bicycle out of cardboard, and in another a news program all paginated with news about waste.

6) How proactive and active are the public institutions? Have they changed their attitude with the crisis?

There is much more awareness, also for the state of need that arises from the crisis. There is a shortage of money, especially in local authorities, and not wasting means saving and using resources better. Let's take the example of public lighting, which in Italy has appalling costs, the highest in Europe, with enormous waste. We have schools, hospitals and streets that are lit every day. It is not necessary. And changing the systems means improving the service, saving money and making healthy public investments aimed precisely at economic growth. Just think about how many interventions in the field of energy efficiency or safety of schools we could have done in Italy without wasting money on the Messina Bridge, a work that will never be done and in the meantime it will cost us something like a billion euros. .

7) When will we see the winners and their projects?

He chooses the jury and at the end of October we will have the winners. They will receive organic products from the Alce Nero & Mielizia company for a weight equal to the winner's weight. An award for Do not waste, in fact ...
