Homeopathy and dog nutrition

Treating your dog with homeopathy. Often with respect to this type of medicine there is a lot of contradictory information, difficult to orientate: those who are faced with the health problems of their pet wonder if the homeopathic remedy really works, if it is adequate for a certain type of problem, how much it costs what to expect from the treatment and if it is decisive. To answer these questions is David Bettio, veterinary homeopath of Parma, president and teacher of the three-year School of Veterinary Homeopathy of the Italian Society of Veterinary Homeopathy and responsible for Olikos Veterinary Homeopathic Center, structure dedicated to homeopathic care of pets.

Doctor Bettio, what is homeopathy?

Simplifying a lot we can say that in homeopathy medicines that derive from plants, minerals and animals are used. These products, such as the arnica that everyone knows, are collected by specialized people in some places in a certain period, the flower is then checked in the laboratory, a mother tincture is produced and from here the whole procedure of the homeopathic remedy starts. obtained by dilutions and succussions.

Why do many simply consider it fresh water?

According to the science that analyzes homeopathic remedies, it is fresh water because it analyzes homeopathy according to a method that is incorrect because it is clear that by diluting a substance, no trace of it is found. Instead, it must be analyzed according to a different model which is of a biophysical type. There are numerous scientific researches that have created sequences on homeopathic remedies by analyzing them with a method other than the analytical-chemical one and it has been seen that these substances have real frequencies. So the remedy works like a wave. A trivial example: for many, opening a metal door is normal, but opening the gate of the house or car with the remote control is also normal.Chemistry works with molecules such as the metal key that enters a receptor and opens a certain type of function. The homeopathic remedy is the remote control that activates a function according to the law of similitude. How is homeopathy applied to dogs different from that applied to people? They are the same drugs for both the dog and the person. Obviously, animals, not speaking, produce symptoms that are clinical signs that one must be able to analyze by comparing the analysis of the remedy. The vet must be able to make a differential diagnosis by observing the dog. In reality the principle is very similar with substantial differences because in veterinary there are many species to be treated, not only dogs and cats but sheep, cattle, horses and others but it is clear that the principles of applicability are the same. However, you must be a veterinarian to do veterinary homeopathy.David Bettio with his ... "little" 4-legged friend! :-)

What are the diseases for dogs that can be treated with homeopathy and which are not?

It's like medicine. Diseases can be tackled all, from a cold to cancer patients or with chronic problems such as gastrointestinal and dermatological diseases, neurological problems. What can't be cured? It depends on the patient's response to therapy which is a problem of medicine in general. In my experience as an expert veterinarian there are many cases from the most varied.

Are the results proven if we compare them to the scientific evidence of conventional medicine?

There is clinical evidence, that is, a series of case histories for which the success rate of disease treatment is proven. This is not the case when I administer a homeopathic remedy to a dog and it is fine for a week then it comes back to me with the same problem. This does not mean to cure, but to treat a section of the disease, such as what cortisone does on an itchy dermatitis and homeopathy can do this too, mind you. From a clinical point of view, I see an extremely high efficacy of homeopathy, I don't know how to quantify a percentage because it would take an epidemiologist to take thousands of medical records that I have in hand and carry out an analysis but, I repeat, there are excellent results according to clinical observations. Then there are basic scientific evidence which is laboratory research documented in important publications, specialized journals such as the research of Professor Paolo Bellavite of the University of Verona, so there is basic research. Then there is clinical observational research that could be developed, but there is already little funding for conventional research; moreover, the institutes that should do homeopathy either do not have the skills to start up a research that makes sense, or they have no money or even oppose it by not even considering the fact of analyzing something that is not conventional medicine. There is a denial even in the face of proven scientific data.

Which cases are most treated with respect to homeopathy for dogs?

In my experience there are many cases of dermatological, gastrointestinal, seasonal problems such as rhinitis, laryngotracheitis, bronchopneumonia. I remember a particular case of a dog with a chronic gastrointestinal disease called Idb which was resolved in a very short time with a homeopathic remedy and with a food change. All documented of course. The beauty of all of this is talking to patient owners who are finally seeing a solution to their dog's chronic situations.

Is there an increase in the demand for homeopathic treatments for dogs compared to ten years ago?

Certainly. I see more and more requests as many of my colleagues testify, there is a positive trend because there is greater sensitivity and awareness also thanks to the fact that finally there are more trained veterinarians, there are schools in Italy that produce training at the highest level .In short, there is no longer the "practitioner" who administers the arnica at random. You must first be a doctor and then use any therapeutic tool, because only by knowing the medicine do you have the opportunity to use the treatment you deem appropriate: whether it is the homeopathic, phytotherapeutic remedy, acupuncture, antibiotic or surgical instrument. At least I would expect this to cure my dog.

Many argue that homeopathic remedies cost a lot, is that right?

It is a lie. For example, for a chronic dog problem, if classic homeopathy is used, sometimes a 15 euro remedy is enough to solve a situation that has lasted for years, so this is not really the case. There are colleagues who have carried out comparative studies in farm animals where obviously the costs of drugs have a huge impact, between conventional and homeopathic products and the latter save companies a lot.

How to find the homeopath vet with the right titles?

It is not easy because the professional associations are not yet equipped with lists of expert homeopathic veterinarians, we have always invoked it but the policy is slow in coming. Therefore it is necessary to refer to the homeopathic scientific societies present in the area such as Siov (Italian Society of Veterinary Homeopathy) or Fiamo (Italian Federation of Homeopathic Physicians). In these two lists you can have access to people who have done a certain type of training.Curated by Sabrina MechellaIt might also interest youHeptavalent vaccine for dogs and cats
