How to eliminate cracks in walls: instructions for best repairing cracks in the house wall and plaster. From the deepest cracks on interior walls to recommended materials.
Repairing cracks in the wall or plaster is not a simple job but do not panic, on this page we will see how to fill the deeper cracks that sometimes form on the internal or external wall of the house.
Why do cracks form?Even if we do not perceive it, the walls of our home are constantly subjected to mechanical stresses and imperceptible movements; it is no coincidence that those who live in a highly seismic area can often encounter the problem of cracks on the walls.
The cracks in the interior walls of the house can derive from problems of humidity on the walls dictated in turn by water infiltration or bad insulation. In this case, as well as repair the crack in the wall, it will be necessary to solve the problem of water infiltrations in order to avoid the reappearance of further cracks and stop the progress of degradation.
Thecracks in the walls they can indicate wear: time consumes everything, including walls! In this context, it could be considered to repaint with special paints or, in more serious cases, to redo the entire plaster and perhaps take advantage of the opportunity to add thermal insulation panels.
Repair of cracks in walls and interior walls
To understand howfill small cracksin the walls we propose a video guide by Leroy Merlin that you will find at the end of the page. The large French chain offers periodicallyfree coursesdedicated to the interventions ofrepairhousekeeper. Among the various topics covered, the appeal was not lacking in the cracks on the internal and external walls of the house.
Before proceeding torepairit is necessary to prepare the crack and the work area in the best possible way. What do you have to do?
- Scrape the crack
With a triangular scraper you widen the crack, it will seem strange to you but this is to remove the most fragile parts of the wall, therefore the outermost areas of the crack. If you skip this procedure, the grout may not adhere well to the surface. Use a triangular scraper because the slit obtained will have a typical V-shape, easier toputty.
- Brush the crack
With a stiff bristle brush, remove every speck of dust from the crack, this preliminary step is always essential to allow the grout to fully fill the crack.
- Moisten the crack
With a soaked sponge, wet the crack. This will also increase the grip of the grout.
- Consolidating fund
If, despite the use of the V-shaped scraper and cleaning with brushes, the wall still tends to crumble (lose dust), spread a consolidating base coat. It is a fixative "Primer "for walls.
Instructions for repair cracks in the wall of home are repeated in the video at the end of the page; the materials you need for repair the cracks in the wallsare the following, in the description there are suggestions on how to use them.
- Filler putty for walls
Better if quick-drying. It will be used for "fill the crack“, Or rather, to fill the space of the crack in the wall. It should be applied with a spatula perpendicular to the crack (it should not be placed from the other downwards, but from left to right and then from right to left to make sure that the entire crack is filled with grout). When applying, let the grout penetrate well into the crack.
- Reinforcement tape
It is used to prevent the crack from reforming and should be applied after the grout.
- Second coat of putty
Apply a second and very light coat of putty to cover the reinforcing tape.
After waiting the necessary time indicated on the filler package, sand the surface to remove any imperfections. From this point you can proceed with the finish by painting with a suitable paint.
Tapes, fillers and paints are useless if the problem is structural
Tapes, stuccos and paints are only aesthetic solutions, however, often the problem of cracks in the walls is structural and the crack is just an alarm bell. If the origin of the crack comes from the ground and from subsidence of the foundation, to solve the problem it is necessary to act at the root before it can get worse.
A definitive and rapid solution is therefore important: First of all, a study of the ground under the house and a survey of the cracks in the walls must be carried out. Once the causes of the cracks on the walls have been understood, it will be necessary to intervene to eliminate them.
We show you this company video GEOSEC (leading Italian company in Europe specialized in these solutions) which explains the origins of the problem:
Possible causes and some useful tips
Never plant tall trees near the foundations of the house, at the same time we do not recommend discharging large quantities of water under the house and it is always a good idea to monitor the water meter to detect anomalies and leaks from the systems. As well as rainwater collection downspouts, they must always be inspected and safely brought away from the foundation of the house to avoid accidental infiltrations.
How to intervene to remedy the situation
Once the cause of the problem has been solved, it is necessary to reinforce the foundation soil with a possibly targeted and definitive consolidation. For this reason, different solutions are now available that allow good results and at low costs such as injections of special eco-compatible resins.
Several solutions are available on the market, but one in particular struck us for reliability and precision; this, unlike the others, makes it possible to carry out consolidations with the assistance of a special "ERT 4D Live" geoelectric monitoring of the soil (pre, during and post intervention) in order to measure precisely those variations in its chemical and physical characteristics caused resin injected in order to compare them (pre, during, and post intervention) with the similar characteristics of the same soil monitored even in completely stable and not sold areas.
The injection operation therefore continues right until the characteristics of the ground transferred become similar to those of the more stable ground and taken as a reference for the benefit of a better uniformity of results.

To repair the cracks in the house wall in a definitive way, it is necessary to start with a good consolidation of the ground, wait for a natural period of settlement and re-balance between the ground and the construction and only then proceed to restore the cracks in the walls with specific products for the masonry previously indicated.
