How peas are sown
The pea is sown in rows, in small furrows and at a depth of 2-3 cm and at a distance of 5 cm between one seed and another.
The distances between the rows according to the variety
- To cultivate thedwarf varietiesa distance between the rows of 40 - 50 cm is required
- In the case of half-branch or semi-climbing varieties, 60 - 80 cm is enough
- For growing climbing peas the distance is 100 - 120 cm.
During the sowing, your worst enemy will be the bird: birds love pea seeds! In this regard, you can put reflective strips placed between one brace and another. If you are sowing peas in the open field, you can take advantage of our guide on how to build a scarecrow.
The wisest thing, to protect them pea crops, would be to install small tunnels covered with anti-bird nets.
When the seedlings have reached the height of a few centimeters, remove the protections and get ready - in case you have sown semi-climbing varieties (half-branch peas) and climbing peas - to install supports. Dwarf varieties want low stakes or the plants will grow prone.
The supports will be used to support the growth of plants. Various types of material can be used to make the supports. Reeds, wooden boards, old broomsticks, sticks of all sorts…!
A support network must be placed between one axis and the other. For semi-climbing varieties, 1 - 1.50 meter high nets will suffice. While for i climbing peas the nets must be almost twice as high. Those who manage a home garden or cultivate on the balcony, can use the railings or fences as supports, even in this case, however, it will be necessary to install branches (nets), or arm themselves with patience and place courtyards running parallel to the floor and knotted to the railings.
Remember that thepeait is a vegetable that improves the fertility of the soil so much that it is used for the practice of green manuring.
