Laughter therapy: exercises and benefits


Laughter therapy, which is not the laugh that escapes, the one that happens every now and then, the spontaneous one. When Madan Kataria, doctor with many years of experience in Bombay, in March 1995 he started thinking about Laughter Therapy he did so also observing how very few people really laugh. Creating collective laugh groups saw that the benefits of laughing, physical and psychological, were often the same whether it was spontaneous or forced laughter.

If the body does not distinguish between a real and a false laugh, Kataria has transformed it into an exercise, in a series of exercises that go to affect the way we breathe. To laugh you have to fill your lungs well, so Laughter Therapy teaches us to breathe correctly, with the diaphragm. If we then add some movements with outstretched arms and upwards, combining them in rhythm, we get healthy exercises to do in a group but also at home.
