RBCs: what they are and what they are for

When we talk about red blood cells we mean i Red blood cells that we find in the blood. They are red blood cells in name and in fact because they have a reddish color linked to the presence of hemoglobin inside them. This glycoprotein is a lot rich in iron and essential for the human body because it has the task of transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide where necessary. In particular, hemoglobin releases oxygen to cells when the blood passes through the many tissues that make up our body. Let's find out more about how it works, what role red cells play and why it is important to talk about it.

RBCs: what are they

As the blood flows, thanks to the fact that the blood flows, the red blood cells spin throughout our body and thus can provide oxygen to the various cells and, at the same time, they are able to remove excess toxic substances.

At full speed, in every drop of blood we can find millions and millions of red cells. I said when fully operational because it is not always like this: with the passage of time their number decreases because they die. Produced by the bone marrow, they have an average life cycle that lasts about a hundred days, 120 at most, so 4 months.

RBCs: what are they for

Other terms with which to indicate these elements of the Human Body they are erythrocytes or red blood cells, particles responsible for the red color of our blood, but this is certainly not their main purpose. They are in fact important because they carry oxygen almost everywhere, taking carbon dioxide which is then moved to the lungs where it is essential for exhalation process.

RBCs: values

In the norm, healthy people have about four red blood cells by section within the urine but this is not always the case, because different values may occur. The count varies according to the age and sex of the subject, for women i default values they are between 4.2 - 5.4 million red blood cells per microliter, for men between 4.7 - 6 million / uL and for children between 4.6 - 4.8 million / uL. There may be anomalies also linked to the living conditions of the single person, to be clear I will give a simple example: if you live at high altitude, you can have parameters that are higher than the standard ones even you are healthy, because there is less tension oxygen.

It is important to have gods correct values of red blood cells, because it is the prerequisite for a good development of vital functions. When you have more blood cells than you should, you are in a condition of polycythemia, which can be caused by many different factors. It can be linked to the intake of anabolic steroids or to intoxication from carbon monoxide, from a condition of dehydration or heart failure, or the onset of kidney disorders, heart or lung diseases. Even smokers can have more red blood cells than they should.

RBCs and hematuria

When it comes to red blood cells in the urine, the term hematuria is used and two types are distinguished: macroscopic and microscopic.

The first concerns the red blood cells in the urine visible to the naked eye that color the urine pink or even brick red or purplish red. It is absolutely not normal for this to happen and it is necessary to find out why by notifying your doctor immediately. LMicroscopic hematuria, on the other hand, it is not visible to the naked eye but it is certainly no less worrying, as a condition, indeed! The microscopic must be identified with a urine test, in the laboratory, and it is the most dangerous hematuria because it is more difficult to detect.

RBCs in the urine: causes

Be they micro or macro, because we can find gods red blood cells in the urine? Let's see the main causes, leaving the doctor to do his job and analyze case by case.

Among the most common are the calculations that crystallize inside the urinary tract and they can get to block the flow of urine, if they reach a certain size. This irritates the lining of the tract and can lead to red blood cells in the urine.

Urinary tract infections can too increase the level of red blood cells in the urine, whether they occur in the kidneys or bladder. When bacteria invade the urinary tract and develop, there is a strong burning sensation in urinating and there are high levels of red blood cells.

Less frequent as a cause is that of kidney diseases. The kidneys can become inflamed for various reasons and cause the urinary tract to bleed with a consequent increase in the level of red blood cells in the urine. This is the case with some primary or secondary kidney diseases also resulting from diabetes mellitus.

Among the causes of the presence of red blood cells in the urine cancer should also be mentioned. In fact, without getting alarmed right away, but you need to know that it could be a symptom of prostate, kidney or bladder cancer if in the advanced stages.

There are also some medicines that have like collateral effect to increase the level of red blood cells in the urine. This happens especially with those drugs that are used to thin the blood, including aspirin.
