Pomsky: characteristics and origin

It arises from the intersection between a Pomeranian and a Husky and that is precisely why it is called Pomsky. It is an animal that manages to make tenderness even to those who are not strictly a lover of dogs because it resembles a soft toy, has a harmless and tender air. Impossible not to feel the urge to caress it.

Has a very soft coat, a sweet and expressive face and a good character: he has all the cards to become a very popular dog and in fact that is exactly what is happening to him. Let's get to know him better because behind his jovial and joyful appearance hides a somewhat poor health.

Pomsky: characteristics

Originally from the United States, this dog has a proportionate body, albeit small in size, shows an intelligent and balanced character and has an affectionate behavior. All this makes it a perfect animal also for living in apartments, as well as in houses with gardens, even if it is necessary to take care of its beautiful hair, medium-long but which needs attention and frequent brush strokes.

Pomsky: origin

It was born from the crossing between two very common Nordic breeds: the Husky and the Pomerania. His name is explicitly the combination of these two names, of the Pom- from Pomerania and the -sky from Husky. We are facing one of the most recent dog breeds that exist, in fact this dog should be considered a half-breed and for the moment we do not find this breed cataloged in the FCI (International Dog Federation) because even if it exists it is developing and it is necessary for it to stabilize before officially joining the list of dog breeds.

Not even in the United States, their country of origin, i Pomsky are officially recognized by the competent bodies and have no Pedigree but this certainly does not prevent them from standing out among the increasingly popular breeds. This boom in popularity is not only registered overseas but also in our continent where several clubs dedicated specifically to the breed are being born.

Returning to the cross that this dog gives us, usually takes place between a Husky female dog it's a Pomeranian male dog And it is not a case. As no two breeds are the exact same size, this mother and father combination is the one that means there are fewer problems giving birth to Pomsky puppies. Nothing is 100% certain because puppies inherit the physical constitution even from their ancestors but it has been possible to verify that if the mother is a Pomeranian the complications are more frequent.

Pomsky: physical appearance

This little dog definitely belongs to the "medium" category because it is not tiny like the ones you put in your handbag. It can weigh from 7 to 14 kilos, it also depends on the category to which they belong. Let me explain: in this breed we can distinguish the Pomsky of the first generation and those of the second generation. The former have a balanced genetic background between Husky and Pomeranian and weigh more, between 9 and 14 kilos, the others weigh between 7 and 9 kilos and show a genetic predominance of the Pomeranian. The latter are perhaps the most desired today because they look like eternal puppies on impact, it is very important to be careful not to treat them as soft toys, because they are living beings with needs and desires. They are not toys.

Even smaller than the second generation Pomsky are the "Pomsky teacup", created ad hoc with selective breeding that is very delicate to manage because they often involve parents who are relatives, which can lead to health complications.

With the size issue sorted out, we have to imagine this dog as a small Husky, both for the various colors of the hair and for the blue eyes, but the contribution of the Pomeranian feels! In fact, Pomskys are slimmer than Huskies, they have shorter legs and a puppy-like look, softer features and a shorter snout.

Pomsky: character

The character of these dogs is difficult to describe because it depends a lot on the genetic baggage that each specimen carries with it from the parents, the Husky share and the Pomeranian share that they have in their DNA.

If the Pomeranian side dominates, we will have a dog with a strong instinct to protect the territory and a strong attachment to the owner, not always friendly with children and with any other animals with which they share the spaces and the effect of the family. It is different if the Pomsky "inherits" the Husky's nature, in that case you will have to deal with a much sweeter character. In common all the Pomskys have a very active and playful side of the character, they are always very sociable and companion animals.

Pomsky: health

Despite being a healthy and strong dog, the Pomsky can exhibit health problems that are very much related to the fact that we are talking about a new breed. The point is that there is still no clear overview of what they are the most common diseases of the breed. At the moment, heart and eye problems seem much more frequent. Joint problems are also often found that are in a certain sense physiological, deriving from the type of constitution of the dog: it is robust and stands on slender joints that are overloaded. It also happens to the Pomeranian, another similarity between the two dogs concerns a tooth problem: the accumulation of plaque on the teeth. Nothing serious, just don't neglect it and use products to prevent it and keep your teeth clean.
