Some acidophilic plants have a very dense vegetation. This is the case of azalea, rhododendron, pieris or boxwood.
In the case of azalea or boxwood, continue with a hedge trimmer. If the azalea is well developed, remove 20 to 30 cm of vegetation from the foliage with the hedge trimmer.
On the rhododendron and pieris, always make cuts in correspondence with a crown of gems.
Irrigation of acidophilic plants
With vegetative growth, plants need more irrigation, especially at the time of flowering. The soil, from late spring to summer, must always be moderately moist.
During irrigation, make sure there are no water stagnations: water stagnation is very harmful to acidophilic plants, causing premature rot of the root system.
The water to be used for irrigation must be"sweet"so as not to increase the pH of the soil and make it alkaline. To irrigate acidophiles, it is better to use:
- Rain water
- Distilled (such as the one sold in supermarkets to power steam irons)
- Recovered from the air conditioner (the air conditioner drain water is distilled water)
Tap water should be excluded if it is too calcareous.
Among the essential care to devote tocultivation of acidophilic plantsthere is monitoring of the soil pH reaction. Irrigating the soil with calcareous water (hard tap water) means increasing its pH. With a high pH, acidophilic plants cannot absorb the nutrients they need most.
